Happy Thadri Sindhi festival

Vadi Thadri Sitala Satain FoodWhat is significance and the similarity of Sindhi Sheetala Saptami – Satain Parva festival and Rajasthani-Marvari Samaj’s Sheetala Ashtami festival puja date, significance, its rituals in India, HK and globally? Which month and tithi Sheetala pooja is being performed?
The following similarities and significances are there of Sheetala Saptami and Sheetala Ashtami Parva Celebration:

  1. Sindhis as well as Rajasthanis celebrate Sheetala devi festival.
  2. Pooja Sangraha by Kiranji for Sheetalashtami reads, “Sheetal (literary ‘cool’) food that has been cooked a day in advance is had. One is not supposed to do any cooking on this day”.                                                                                    Sindhi observance of Sitala Saptami in Sindhi English dictionary of Parmanand Mewaramji reads, “dedicated by Hindus to the goddess of small pox when cold food is eaten”.
  3. Both community offer prayers to Goddess Sheetala in order to appease goddess. It is for blessings for health (i.e. small-pox).
  4. On that particular day fire is not supposed to be lit at home.

Basoda puja among Maravaris: This pooja is dedicated to goddess Śheetalā शीतला.

The Shitala or Sheetala Ashtami puja festival is celebrated worldwidely on the “8th Ashtami tithi” eighth day of Krishna Paksha of Chaitra Masa (during month of March or April). It is celebrated on the eight days after Holi festival.

For Sindhis Sheetala prayer festival is during August and September on “7th Saptami tithi”. On the chhath (sixth tithi) ‘food preparation’ takes place with prayers of agni ‘Chulh’. On the Satain (seventh tithi) Sheetala pooja (Sitala) food offering and ‘food consumption’ takes place i.e. both day prayers are there. Hence, on the sixth day (sixth tithi) food is prepared for consuming it on the next day. And Saptami i.e. on the seventh day not to lit the agni – fire in the home.

Boondi Raita for Thadri Festival

Other than annually Thadri festival, when Sindhis used to pray Sitala devi?
Small pox or chicken pox ماتا نڪرڻ : Whenever people used to get small-pox or chicken-pox (Nandhi mata or Vadi Mata). They used cold food and people prayed to Devi Mata.
The mother goddess Devi is worshipped in various forms, Śhitalā, being the small-pox goddess, is worshipped by Sindhis in Bharat (India), Hong Kong and all over world wherever Sindhi community is residing.

Whereas Rajasthanis worshipped on the ashtami tithi of Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight of Chaitra masa during month of March or April ) i.e. worship of the goddess Sitala puja falls on the Aatham – Ashtami tithi (8th day of the second half of Falgun – Phalgun).
