The importance and meaning of the Janyaa जणिया – यज्ञोपवीत جَڻيو is : It is “The sacred Brahmanical thread.” It is a thread ceremony. Upanayana – Yagyopavitham: In Sanskrit it is also called Yagyopavitham. It is also called Upanayan – Janoi – Janayu – Yagyopivit – Yagyopavitam – Upavit – Munja. It’s initiation, investiture of Sacred Thread. The ‘sacred thread’ is a thin cord, composed of the three cotton strings (strands). A brahamachari (young boy – a student) during this ceremony receives a sacred thread which is called Yagnopavitam – Yajñopaveetam that he wears for the first time.

It is one of the samskara among the many sanskara – Hindu Ceremonies. It is recommended for Hindus. This Yajñopavita ceremony announces that the child has entered into a formal education.

“This ceremony is called the upanayana, which means ‘introduction to knowledge’, for by it a Brahmin”. A brahamachari is one who he maintains celibacy and Guruji gives real-knowledge.

  1. If in ones city there is no grahan eclipse, then one can perform the thread ceremony.

13th July is grahan (eclipse). Hence, if the grahan is visible in ones city, then thread ceremony initiation to be arranged on other available auspicious day.

  1. There are no muhuratas – auspicious days during grahan of sun and moon (solar and lunar) eclipse in a place where such initiation of thread ceremony takes place.

  2. Planet’s Combustion: Shukra and Guru Brahaspati Graha Asta (Tara Asta – Taro Budal): No muhuratas of Janyaa – upanayana are there when planet is Asta (combust).
  3. Ancestor’s fortnight-Shraaddha Paksha: There are no muhuratas in the Bhadrapad masa – Bhaadon (Baddo Mahino) Mahalaya during Pitra Paksha. In Hindi Yagyopavit – upanayana is called ‘Janeu’; in Sindhi it is called ‘Janiyaa-Janyaa-Janya-Janyo’; in Gujarati yagyopavit is called ‘Janoi’; in Marathi it is ‘Munja’; Jandemu in Telugu; Punul in Tamil. In Bengali Language it is called ‘Paite’; in Nepali it is ‘Bratabandha’.

Among the Shukla Paksha (bright fortnight) and the Krishna Paksha (dark fortnight), the earlier has an importance.
