When Sindhi Teejri Vrat occurs annually ?
Teejri – Sindhi Sāvan Mahine Ji Undhāi Teeja :

Usually, Teejri vrat pooja comes three days after Raksha Bandhan (Rakhi – Rakhri) and five days before Sri Krishna Janam.
Traditionally, Teejri Vrat (Tijri Fast) occurs on the Teeja Tithi – Trittiyā. It is celebrated on the third day in Bhadon Badi (Baddo Vadi Undhai).
The Sindhi Sāvan Mahino Teeja – right after the Rakshābandhan, Full Moon during august or september when the 3rd digit of moon, Krishna Paksha – Darker Fortnight is there; Teejri is observed every year.

What is ‘Asur’? What is done in Asur?

  1. Asur Karan (Waking up before dawn to consume the food) :
    On this festive day, they wake up before the dawn to perform a ritual called ‘Asur’ and consume the food intake. They clean their mouth by biting a twig called ‘Musāg’.

Traditionally, either on the Teejri day (which is 6th August 2020) or on the eve (i.e. one day before Teejri), single (kumara – spinsper) and married women adorn their hands with the ‘mehendi’.

  1. Gouvarjā – Teejri Mātā Poojā in Pingho (Goddess Prayers)

Then, next step after asur is that, in the morning, spinster and married women visits to the Brahmin’s home to offer prayers to Teejri Mātā. For prayers, they offer ‘Sharbat’ i.e. sugared water to the Teejri Mātā plant in the Pingho (while swinging it). During the course of the day, women’s fasting and singing takes place.

As the evening approaches, spinster and married decorates a ‘Pooja Thali’ and themselves with bright bridal colours. The Brahmin’s wife or otherwise, Maharaj (priest) he himself recites the Katha of Teejri; after which continuing their fast; they consume water ONLY, until they see the moon. Thanks giving takes place towards prayer performing Brahmin’s wife and or for brahmin.

  1. Chand Khe Ark-Diyan ‘Arug’ (Moon Prayers) an oblation by : Niyāni – Kumāri Kanyā (Spinster) and Suhāgins (Married)

Sanskrit word arghya : “a particular act of homage to the moon”. Sindhi word is ‘Argh’. Arghyam: Sanskrit dictionary reads, “a respectful offering or an oblation to a god or venerable person”.
Argh-Diyan: At night, on seeing the moon, they make their offerings of ‘Arug’. They use “Pooja thali’s” (Katcho Khiru-Raw Milk, Katcha Chawan-Raw Rice, Water, Sugar and Flowers) to the Moon. Diyā and Agarbatti is also offered while praying. And sametime reciting prayers to moon for the Longetivity of their respective husband and also for eternal marital bliss. Then they break their fast i.e. fasting concludes.
